He wasnt a cool chick magnet.Martin spoke with Fox News about growing up with Dean, the Rat Pack, Jerry Lewis and more. But wasnt Jerry Lewis part of that gang, too 1. I raved on about how great Dean and Jerry were and Uncle Harvey said, “They went pffft.” (Yes, he made that sound.)Why wasnt Jerry Lewis considered a member of the Rat Pack There was Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, and Joey Bishop. I remember my Uncle Harvey was with my dad as they picked me up from the Strand theater. As revealed by Biography, the comedy duo met at a nightclub function and began incorporating one another in their respective on-stage acts. The following year, the pair started releasing movies together, and by 1950, they were gracing small screens across the country with their 'Colgate Comedy Hour.'I first saw them together in the 1956 movie Pardners, a comedy western, it was re-released in 1963 and I must have seen this film in that year. Dean Martin truly hit the big leagues after teaming up with Jerry Lewis in 1946.

Jerry, admittedly, wanted to “make them forget (Charlie) Chaplin”. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were thought of as “a nice guy straight man” with “a great comedian” who basically carried the act. While Dean was fairly content to be a singer/straight man to Jerry, Jerry had huge ambitions. Dean only enjoyed working “so much”, then he liked to get out onto the links and tee off… a simple enough explanation for the breakup. But pinpointing the reasons regarding such a split, like trying to surmise why any couple splits up, is usually not so simple. It is usually not just one thing, more likely a compound of several factors, each one to a greater or lesser degree.Reason Two Commonly Given For the Split Up: Jerry was “taking over” the act.Although most people of our generation know Dean Martin as a funny, personable, talented singer, at the time of Martin and Lewis, he was basically thought to be a “fifth wheel”, a lucky guy who latched onto a multi-talented, brilliant comedian.

I was first a Dean Martin fan watching his variety show ever Thursday night at 8:00. And the other man replied, ‘Yes, but I’m the only one who knows how much they hurt.’I agree, this whole article reflects what angered Dean in the first place: portraying Lewis as the “real genius” while Dean was just the “crooning straight man”! The truth behind the scenes is yes, Lewis was a talented, comical performer and director BUT Dean Martin was NATURALLY FUNNY and that’s a BIG difference! Dean didn’t have to “try” to be amusing, he just was! And it showed in his “Post Martin & Lewis” nightclub act and the “super” popular DEAN MARTIN SHOW!Also, Jerry Lewis wasn’t always the nicest guy in real life! In two of his best movies (the only ones I can stomach, admittedly) THE NUTTY PROFESSOR and HOOK,LINE and SINKER his characters more accurately reflected who the “Real Jerry” was, especially “Buddy Love”! You can also view the interview he conducted with Muhammad Ali–who I thought was funnier than Jerry, while Jerry just came across as obnoxious! Finally, according to the biopic “Martin And Lewis”, in one of their TV appearances, while Dean was singing, Jerry spitefully commandeered the camera crew and ruined Dean’s whole moment! I’ve seen the actual footage on YouTube and it was WORSE than what the biopic showed, with Jerry ending the charade by physically grabbing Dean by the hair and shaking his head , forcefully demanding that he “…sing, sing…”! It was humiliating but Dean kept a smile for the cameras–until they got back stage, or so the biopic suggested!Interesting ideas. I think Jerry Lewis said it best himself: “…the man said to the other man, ‘Those are beautiful shoes you’re wearing’. “Then we’ll just have to get someone else”, said Jerry loftily.“Start looking, boy!” said Dean as he stormed away. Thus, the two who had made millions of dollars together and made the world laugh so richly broke up. But Dean didn’t relish the idea of playing a cop and refused. In the film’s script, Dean was to play a policeman.
According to my research and an interview I saw of Dean Martin, shortly before he died, he said “somebody put he idea into Jerry Lewis’s head that he could be another Charlie Chaplin and he believed it and from then on was never the same”. However, as to why they broke up? Like I said I am a huge fan and Jerry Lewis was at his best with Dean Martin. Jerry Lewis said when they broke up in 1956 the broke off commitments and contracts totaling over 400 million dollars in 1956 dollars.
Everyone who ever worked with the team before, during and after their break up have all said that Dean was the funny one not Jerry.Their was a comment about Jerry Lewis’s singing. However, in their movies it was Jerry. Reviewers at the time stated that in their night club act it was Dean who carried the act. I think Jerry Lewis was jealous of Dean because of that and that was a big part of the break up. When you watch their movies or The Colgate Comedy Hour Dean could go out on stage by himself and entertain the audience, Jerry couldn’t he needed Dean.
I grew up in the 50s on the streets of Queens, NY. So I beg to differ with that comment.I agree with three previous comments. As well as the Nutty Professor he Sing “That Ole Black Magic”. In Rock A Bye Baby hes sings several, beautifully. In his solo pictures he proves it.
I know I can buy a dvd but I’m honestly afraid to risk it. There were no reruns that I remember, so it is hard to recall specific skits. Back in the early days of television, the Colgate Comedy Hours which were hosted by Dean and Jerry were the highlight of each month. Luckily, as I turned 12, I discovered that girls could go a long way toward filling those voids. Their breakup, followed by the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn marked the end of my childhood the dawning of adult cynicism.

Common denominator? A man named Dean Martin. Interestingly, the only other group of entertainers whose presence on stage seemed to define the word synergy was when Dean teamed up with Frank and Sammy. But together they were a whole much greater than its parts.
